The eternal dilemma in a student’s mind: which one of the ‘big three’ of prepositions to use to translate ‘en‘. There are many rules (and some exceptions), but here we are going to focus on three: ‘in’ for an enclosed space, ‘at’ for a specific point and ‘on’ for a surface or flat space.


Are there any dishes in the dishwasher? – ¿Hay platos en la lavavajillas?

Meet us at the bus station. – Quedamos en la estación de autobuses.

Is there a sign on the door? – ¿Hay un cartel en la puerta?
