More English with the Manitou Cliff Dwellings

If you want to see a rare historical and cultural treasure up close, then you must visit the Manitou Cliff Dwellings of Manitou Springs. “Manitou” is a Native American word which means “great spirit”. This former home of the Anasazi Indians will give you a great opportunity to see what life was like for them over 800 years ago!

The ruins are located minutes from Colorado Springs under red sandstone cliffs which provide a protective overhang that has helped preserve the fascinating architecture of the Anasazi homes.

The Pueblo-style building is three stories high and was first opened to the public in 1907. You can explore the dwellings room by room in a self-guided tour, or you can book a guide. Either way, you will learn of the American Indian culture that occupied the southwestern part of the present United States from 1200 B.C to 1300 A.D.

The Anasazi did not actually live in the area of Manitou Springs, but instead several hundred miles in the Four Corners area (where the states Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado all meet). So, how did the dwellings get to where they are now? In the early 1900s the cliff dwellings were relocated stone by stone from Anasazi ruins in southwest Colorado and reassembled in Manitou Springs in order to preserve them and create a museum for people to visit.

It is a perfect combination while visiting the town of Manitou Springs, which has a vibrant artesian community, eight natural mineral springs, historical centers and numerous interesting restaurants and shops.
