Betty Who.

Born Jessica Anne Newham on October 5, 1991, Betty Who has now become a pop sensation. The artist is from Sydney, Australia, and was introduced to music at the age of 4. It was at that time that she started learning the cello. In 2007, her parents enrolled her into the Interlochen Center for the Arts in the state of Michigan. The school has a reputation for housing celebrities; now-famous artists Norah Jones and Rufus Wainwright got their start at this institution!

Betty Who taught herself how to play the piano and guitar, writing her first songs around the age of fourteen. Following her education at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, she was accepted into the Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was there that she met one of the most important people who would later launch her into stardom; producer Peter Thomas. They began working together on material, such as lyrics and the music itself. Jessica chose the artist name of Betty Who around this time and released her first single, “Somebody Loves You,” in 2012. She received a great deal of acclaim from bloggers, listeners, and record labels. What started initially as a free music download virtually turned into Billboard’s Dance/Club chart’s number one song!

She released her debut album in April of 2013. It was then that many labels began expressing intense interest in her work. RCA Records, however, was the label Betty Who eventually chose to represent her. The first album, The Movement, had a lot of 80’s sounds, and her new presence in the music scene continued to draw more attention. So much so, in fact, that Time magazine nominated her as one of the 14 Musical Acts to Watch in 2014. She is definitely a new artist to tune into, and her lyrics are clear and have a deep meaning that anyone could relate to.
