Breakfast around the world

Los cimientos de un día productivo – Breakfast is the most important meal of the day all over the world.

The importance of breakfast is a fact. If you want to perform at a high level, you need to fuel up with a healthy, hearty breakfast. What varies is just what people around the world eat.

Students often ask us – both American and British teachers – if we really eat a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, beans (UK) or pancakes (US). The answer is ‘it depends’. We are all busy people, and this type of full breakfast is something usually reserved for the weekends. Remember, we are the ones who made the portable paper coffee cup popular.

It is true that people in northern countries usually eat more than the Mediterranean pastry and coffee at the bar. But there are a lot more cultural and regional differences out there. Did you know, for example, that people in Japan eat miso soup and noodles? This takes the age-old question of ‘sweet or salty?’ to a whole new level. For westerners anyway.

From chutney in India, to spam (a spiced, canned ham) in Hawaii, to the yeast extract spread ‘marmite’ in Australia, the world shows off its diversity at the breakfast table. Hopefully you’ve already has something to eat before you listen to this section because something is going to make you hungry.
